Dr. Karolina Roszak
Dr. Karolina Roszak has a passion for microsurgery: tiny instruments, delicate structures, and complicated cases that require an unreasonable amount of patience. Fortunately, she finds this relaxing.
Her favorite cases tend to be the complicated ones. She particularly enjoys challenging cataract surgeries involving lens instability, subluxation, or luxation, as well as glaucoma surgery using drainage valve implants and laser techniques.
Her interests also include corneal surgery, medically indicated eyelid procedures, and therapeutic fillers. The goal is better eye health, not a younger-looking Labrador, though a little cosmetic improvement is certainly welcome.
Originally from Poland, Dr. Roszak earned her veterinary degree in 2014 and pursued clinical and surgical training across Europe, New Zealand, and the United States. She completed a retinal disease and gene therapy research fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by corneal disease and artificial intelligence research and an ABVO-approved ophthalmology residency at UC Davis.
Her research has contributed to numerous scientific publications, but surgery remains her greatest passion. She has completed multiple advanced cataract surgery courses, including one at Harvard, and trained extensively with HelpMeSee and Eyesi surgical simulators (think flight simulators, but for eye surgery). She has yet to encounter a cataract surgery course she didn't want to take.
Dr. Roszak is also pursuing her long-term goal of bringing retinal surgery into veterinary practice. She continues to learn from human ophthalmologists and recently completed an observership with the retina service at Miami's Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Retinal surgery is not yet among the procedures she offers.
She loves the precision and problem-solving of microsurgery, but her greatest reward is seeing patients comfortable and able to see again. Her goal is to preserve vision whenever possible and make life easier for pets and their families.
Dr. Roszak is excited to join Miami's Bird Road community. She enjoys playing sports, traveling, and sailing, which made Miami an easy choice. Her Spanish is slowly coming along. Her patients have been very understanding so far.
